AI for accounting firms: where to start
Law had its wave. Sales had its wave. Accounting firms have been oddly untouched — plenty of point tools, but no one has really owned the space the way you'd expect for a profession this document-heavy and rules-driven. For firms willing to move now, that gap is the opportunity.
Here's how we'd think about a first project.
Start where the work is repetitive and rules-based
The best first automation isn't the flashiest — it's the one that runs the same way every day. In a typical firm that means:
- Bookkeeping and transaction categorization. High volume, consistent logic, painful at scale.
- Expense classification. Rules-heavy, error-prone by hand, and a constant source of cleanup.
- Document intake. Pulling structured data out of statements, receipts, and PDFs.
These share a shape: lots of repetition, clear rules, and a human currently doing the tedious middle. That's exactly what an agent does well.
Keep it on your data — and often on-prem
Client financial data is sensitive, and trust is the product. So the architecture matters as much as the model. A custom bookkeeping agent that runs against your systems — ideally on-premise or in your own cloud, with least-privilege access and no training on client data — is a very different proposition from pasting a client's books into a public chatbot.
That's the version we build: the intelligence of a frontier model, wired into the firm's own environment, on the firm's own terms.
Keep a human in the loop
Automation in accounting isn't about removing the accountant — it's about removing the data entry between the accountant and the judgment call. The agent proposes; a person reviews the exceptions and signs off. You move faster without giving up the control the work requires.
The pragmatic first step
You don't need an "AI transformation." You need one workflow — categorization, say — automated cleanly, on your data, with a human reviewing the edge cases. Prove it there, measure the hours saved, then expand.
If you run a firm and want to scope that first workflow, book a call — we'll start with a readiness audit and a ranked plan.
